CEO, South China Morning Post Publishers Ltd

Gary Liu is CEO of South China Morning Post, a leading English-language media company covering China and Asia. Founded in 1903, SCMP is headquartered in Hong Kong and is the city’s newspaper of record. Along with its flagship news products, SCMP also publishes Hong Kong’s premier lifestyle and fashion magazines, including Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Elle Men, Esquire and Cosmopolitan. Prior to joining SCMP in January 2017, Gary was CEO of Digg, spearheading the New York startup’s transformation from aggregator to a data-driven news platform. Previously, Gary was Head of Spotify Labs, where he led emerging technologies and business strategies for Spotify’s global markets, after joining as Global Director of Ad Product Strategy. Gary has also worked at AOL and Google.

Born in the United States, Gary grew up in Taiwan and New Zealand, before returning to the American Northeast where he lived and worked for 20 years. He currently lives in Hong Kong with his wife Katrina, a pediatric dentist. Gary is an Economics graduate from Harvard University.

Sinead Boucher

Sinead was appointed Stuff CEO in August 2017, following a career of more than two decades in media in New Zealand and abroad. Prior to becoming CEO, Sinead was New Zealand Group Executive Editor for four years, responsible for New Zealand’s largest newsroom. Under Sinead’s guise, Stuff’s stable of newspapers, magazines and number one news site, Stuff.co.nz, grew to record audience numbers and was named New Zealand’s most influential publishing brand.

Sinead started her career as a reporter for The Press and gained international experience in London working as a digital journalist for the Financial Times site and as a general correspondent for Reuters’ London bureau. She was Stuff’s first digital editor, leading the growth of the young Stuff site into the largest digital brand in New Zealand.

In 2015, Sinead won Fairfax’s internal Woman of Influence Award recognising the special role she has had in advancing gender diversity, at Fairfax and beyond.

Sinead was also awarded the 2012 Wolfson Fellowship prize, the highest personal accolade in New Zealand journalism.

Tasked with leading the re-engineering of its metro publishing portfolio, Jess joined Fairfax Media in October 2016, following a 20 year career in media and digital consultancy in both Australia and abroad. Prior to joining Fairfax, she established digital studio, Wilson Fletcher in Australia and New Zealand, where she specialised in early-stage product development and led strategic digital programmes for some of the region’s most recognised media brands including The Australian, ABC, NZ Herald and Sky TV. A paid content specialist, Jess pioneered digital subscription and membership models at British Consumer Organisation, Which?, where she helped grow its online services into the largest consumer subscription website in Europe. She is a passionate digital leader and was last year named Innovation Champion in Fairfax’s Women of Influence Awards recognising the role she has played driving the digital transformation of the business.

Torry Pedersen is Head of Editorial and a member of Schibsted Media's top management team. He was previously the CEO/Editor in Chief of Verdens Gang AS, Norway’s most read news-site/newspaper. He began his career as a journalist in Fredrikstad Blad 1981, and has more than 35 years of experience in journalism and publishing.

Pedersen has been Managing Editor in VG, Editor in Chief/Publisher in VG Multimedia AS, CEO of Verdens Gang AS and from 2011, both CEO and Editor in Chief of Verdens Gang AS. 

He was educated at the Norwegian School of Management (formerly the Bedriftsøkonomisk Institutt), Oslo 1979 and holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He has been awarded the "Chief Editor of the Year Award" in Norway, and during his time as Editor in Chief and CEO, Verdens Gang won several prizes.

Tobias Henning is the General Manager Premium of the popular German newspaper BILD. BILD has a daily print circulation of nearly 2 million copies sold and reaches in digital around 20 million unique users per month. BILD is the most widely read news media brand in Germany. As General Manager Premium he is responsible for BILD’s digital paid content offer „BILDplus“. With almost 400,000 digital subscribers BILDplus is the most successful paid content offer in Germany. Joon Ian Wong manages CoinDesk’s business in Europe and Asia, based in London. He recently rejoined CoinDesk after nearly three years with Quartz as its European technology correspondent, where he worked on several noteworthy Quartz projects including its subscription newsletter, its book, and its Obsessions newsletter. Joon-Nie Lau

Joon-Nie leads the WAN-IFRA APAC team in Singapore. A lawyer by training, Joon-Nie spent over 15 years in broadcast television as a reporter, interactive producer, current affairs producer and news editor at Channel News Asia and its predecessors SBC News and TCS News. She has won several in-house awards for reporting, executive producing and best ‘live’ coverage and a Student Emmy for her Masters documentary project produced at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism while under a fellowship from MediaCorp. 

In her seven years teaching at Nanyang Technological University, Joon-Nie set up and headed Newsplex Asia, a US$700,000 convergent training newsroom and media lab in partnership with WAN-IFRA.

Besides being a Vice-President of the Singapore Press Club for over 10 years and co-founding the Hacks/Hackers Singapore chapter in 2015, Joon-Nie is also a regular speaker and trainer at conferences, workshops and industry panels both locally and abroad.

Kate Beddoe

Kate Beddoe is the head of news and publishing partnerships in APAC. Prior to joining Google in July 2015 she had been working in the Australian media industry for over 20 years, the last 15 in digital roles in both pure digital business and traditional media companies.

Her focus is on bringing the best of Google to news and publishing partners in the region and making sure that the unique needs of the region are well reflected in Google’s approach to the news ecosystem.

As a former journalist in magazine and digital newsrooms Kate is committed to using storytelling to drive real business outcomes, for Google and it’s news partners in APAC. In her time she's created new teams, walked in to manage old ones, owned P&Ls and operated in environments where she had influence but no control. All of which makes her excited and empathic to the challenges faced in the modern news ecosystem.

When not working, Kate enjoys to spend time with her husband and two amusing children; travelling and perfecting the mix of a good espresso martini.

Kevin Krolicki

A Reuters veteran, Kevin Krolicki has worked for Reuters for 22 years in Tokyo, Los Angeles, Detroit, Washington and Singapore. He is currently based out of Singapore in the capacity of Regional Editor for Asia at Reuters.  

Kevin has been with Reuters since 1996. During his time with the company, he has served as a producer and bureau chief for the West Coast, Detroit, Japan and—more recently—Washington.

Kevin started work as a journalist near the peak of the Japanese asset bubble in 1989. He spent six years as a market and policy reporter at Knight Ridder (later Bridge News) and became Tokyo bureau chief there in 1995. He joined Reuters in 1996 as a producer for what was then Reuters Financial Television and became Asia editor for that service.

In 2000, Kevin was named West Coast Equities EIC based in Los Angeles. In 2006, Kevin returned to Detroit, his home town, as bureau chief. In 2008, he was one of the team of reporters who won a SABEW “Best in Business” award for coverage of GM’s merger talks with Chrysler. He was named Reuters Editor of Year in 2013. Kevin graduated from Harvard University and has a Master’s Degree in journalism from the University of Michigan.

Technology Editor, South China Morning Post, Hong Kong

Kong Ho is the Technology Editor at the South China Morning Post, leading a team of reporters and editors dedicated to covering technology in Asia, with a particular focus on China.

In his previous positions at Bloomberg News, he reported and edited out of Shanghai and Singapore for over a decade. One of his last roles at Bloomberg News was leading coverage of the automotive industry in Asia.

Prior to Bloomberg, Kong Ho wrote for The Asian Banker and Singapore Press Holdings' publications - The Straits Times, The Sunday Times and Streats.

Korey Lee

Korey Lee joined the South China Morning Post in March, 2017 to spearhead the data operations of the now 115-year-old news organization. 

Before joining the SCMP, Korey was Vice President of Analytics at KeyMe, a New York-based hardware startup that leverages computer vision technology and machine learning to provide an automated and seamless key duplication experience for customers across the US. Previously, he was co-founder and CIO of SumAll, a connected data platform for over 500,000 businesses worldwide. Prior to this, he led the business intelligence and analytics teams at AppNexus and Squarespace. Korey has also worked in various capacities at Google, including revenue strategy, sales finance, payment operations, and business analytics. He was previously with PriceWaterhouseCoopers in venture capital tax and audit.

Korey holds a B.A. degree in Business Administration, and a B.S. degree in Economics from University of California Berkeley.

Associate Director, Digital Services Innovation Division, The Asahi Shimbun

Kyoko ITO is an Associate Director of Digital Services Innovation Division who oversees digital marketing, new digital business development, international digital news services, and advertising. She started her career at a major internet provider services company as a planner/developer of new digital contents. In 2001, she moved to The Asahi Shimbun and has since built her career as a digital/mobile services producer, web marketer, digital ads developer and ads sales strategist. Her career includes a stint at the paper’s San Jose office in Silicon Valley in 2003, where her duty included the global coordination of digital news distribution, reporting on IT affairs and the management of computer servers. In 2015, she won a prize in an essay contest held by the Japan Newspaper Association with her entry entitled “Newspapers Readers Are The Source of Business and The Realization of Marketing Automation for Internet Users.” A highly-skilled administrative professional and business planner, she concurrently serves as a director of the Japan Interactive Advertising Association (JIAA). She graduated from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies with a major in Russian and East European studies.

Simon Park works as a content strategist for Mediati, a Seoul-based media startup accelerator. He helps young media companies plan, test, publish, examine their content. 

At Mediati, Park also works as a consultant for legacy media companies which are having problems in creating mobile and digital content. After decades of near market domination, most Korean newspapers and television networks are facing steep challenges from big digital platform companies. Mediati is helping the media scene evolve in South Korea. 

Park has an eclectic range of interests and writes regularly for various media outlets on media, technology, design, and American politics.

Mark van de Kamp heads up Escenic, a CCI-owned media tech company specializing in CMS platforms. Mark’s mission is to make digital storytelling more intuitive for the creators and more engaging for the audiences. Matthew Iles studied journalism at Duke University before embarking on an entrepreneurial career in digital marketing and innovative business modeling. He is CEO of The Civil Media Company, whose mission is to power independent, sustainable journalism throughout the world using blockchain and cryptoeconomics. The company has US$5m in funding from ConsenSys and was recently featured in New York Times, Washington Post, Quartz and Adweek.

Nicci Meek

As a Strategic Partner Manager with Instagram Asia Pacific, Nicci works closely with creators on best creative practices and integrations on the Instagram platform. She is based in Singapore.

Prior to this current role, Nicci was a liaison for Channel Partnerships at Foxtel and covered external channel groups, including Discovery, Turner, Disney, Viacom and the BBC. One of her favourite career moments was launching the Foxtel Kids App in 2016. Nicci has over seven years of experience in traditional media production focused on brand integration and broadcast talent for national Australian networks and production companies.

Nicci holds a Bachelor of Media in Screen Production from Macquarie University. She loves cooking and watching all kinds of sports.

Nicole leads the Wall Street Journal Custom Studios team in APAC to produce content marketing, creative solutions and thought leadership in digital, print, events, and research for clients. Nicole and her team work together with the Media Sales team to drive revenue through non-traditional advertising means.

Previously, Nicole was the Head of Production for digital creative agency Razorfish in both Hong Kong and Sydney, before joining Dow Jones in 2016.

Director, Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, UK

Dr Rasmus Kleis Nielsen is Director at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism and serves as Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Press/Politics.

His work focuses on changes in the news media, on political communication, and the role of digital technologies in both. He has done extensive research on journalism, American politics, and various forms of activism, and a significant amount of comparative work in Western Europe and beyond.

Executive Producer, Abacus, South China Morning Post, Hong Kong

Ravi Hiranand was appointed Executive Producer of the South China Morning Post in January 2018. He is in charge of the editorial direction and content creation of Abacus, SCMP’s news product reporting all about China tech for the rest of the world.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Ravi has spent 14 years at CNN International in Hong Kong, covering a wide range of news from the Mumbai terror attacks to the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. In 2011, he launched the network’s flagship Asia primetime show, News Stream, a global newscast with a heavy focus on technology stories.

Outside of work, Ravi can often be found flying across Hong Kong with his drone, exploring virtual worlds in video games, and building tiny worlds with LEGO.

Pre-Sale Director, Asia-Pacific, T Brand Studio International, The New York Times

Reno Ong is Pre-Sale Director, Asia-Pacific, for The New York Times’ T Brand Studio in Hong Kong. Reno oversees T Brand’s pre-sale strategy and client outreach in the Asia-Pacific region, identifying opportunities to develop compelling branded content across the publisher’s digital and print platforms.

Prior to joining The New York Times, Reno was the Director of Digital Strategy at Hong Kong luxury-lifestyle media startup #legend and the International Homepage and Audience Engagement Editor at TIME. A journalist at heart, he previously copyedited the international edition of TIME magazine, handling global coverage that encompassed current affairs, politics, business and culture.

Samantha Yap
Samantha Yap is the Founder & Director of YAP Global based in London. She's a fintech, blockchain and cryptocurrency media specialist with past experience working as an international freelance journalist in Jakarta, Melbourne, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. Prior to delving into fintech PR at the beginning of 2017, she worked at ChannelNews Asia in Singapore as a broadcast journalist and current affairs producer. At ChannelNews Asia, she worked on its flagship talk show programme, Perspectives, and produced several other programmes including a special documentary filmed in Jakarta. 

Former Managing Director, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Switzerland

Steven was a member of NZZ-Mediengruppe’s executive management board from February 2014 to September 2018 and managing director of the business unit NZZ Medien from January 2015. He led the business along with the editor-in-chief of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Eric Gujer.

Previously, he was an associate partner in the Zurich office of McKinsey & Company and member of the leadership of the firm’s European media practice. He has extensive experience in advising media, sports and telecommunications companies.

Steven studied business administration (marketing, finance, computer science) at the University of Bayreuth and earned his doctorate in innovation management at the University of Aachen in 2008. Steven is married and is father to three children.

Teymoor Nabili is a veteran international journalist based in Singapore. 

Over a 28-year career he has anchored, reported and produced news and programmes for the BBC, Al Jazeera, CNBC, CNN and Channel NewsAsia. He has reported major breaking stories from the field, including 9/11, the Asian Tsunami and the Japan earthquake, and covered global events from the studio like the Arab spring and the global financial crisis. Tilman Wagner is a researcher, journalists and curious open mind with the Innovation Team at Deutsche Welle. With one background in digital media production and another one in media sciences, he focuses on the intersection of journalism and technology - always with the aim to improve the user experience. With a personal interest in digital storytelling, Tilman has worked on projects around social media analysis and data-driven-approaches, and is currently all-in for drone journalism, digital verification and transparent algorithmic news offerings. Before joining DW, he worked as a UX specialist at the United Nations media department and as a Concept Designer for Accenture, an international technology consulting company.

Yiling Ding

Yiling Ding is Chief Marketing Officer at Zilliqa, where she is focused on helping people better understand and adopt blockchain as a revolutionary technology. Prior to Zilliqa, she led APAC marketing for Google Pay, where she led the launch of the Google Pay brand across Asia. Her other experiences include building out the digital marketing program for Google Play. Yiling speaks fluent Japanese, Mandarin, and English, and is passionate about whisky and gaming.

After 20 years in print media, Yvonne moved to broadcast where she produced a weekly current affairs series for Channel NewsAsia.

In 2016, she oversaw the setting up of CNA Insider to target the channel's documentaries and original made-for-digital feature stories at a digital and social media audience.

Deputy Executive Editor, South China Morning Post

Zuraidah Ibrahim is deputy executive editor of South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. She oversees the city and international desks and also runs a Sunday magazine, This Week in Asia, which won the Best News Website award from WAN-IFRA in 2017. She was previously deputy editor of Singapore’s largest English newspaper, The Straits Times. She co-authored the book Lee Kuan Yew, Hard Truths to Keep Singapore Going (2011) and a monograph on the Singapore opposition (2017). She studied political science in Singapore and the United States.
