CEO, Spinlet Group, Nigeria

Nkiru Balonwu is CEO of the Spinlet Group. Spinlet is a digital media distribution company, focusing on Africa-centric content. It operates Africa’s leading store for legal sales of home-grown music, accessible globally through mobile apps (iOS and Android) and browsers (www.spinlet.com). Before her appointment as CEO, Nkiru worked at different times as General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer within the company.

She has more than 15 years’ experience advising on transactions spanning across technology, intellectual property and media and has taught law at the University of Lagos. Nkiru has a keen interest in development policy particularly as it relates to empowering women and girls through ICT. She is a strong believer and advocate of music and film as tools of soft power and catalysts for social change and economic development in Africa.

She holds a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, a master’s degree from the University College London and is admitted to the bar in New York, Nigeria, and England & Wales.

Editor, The Sunday Punch, Nigeria

Toyosi Ogunseye is the editor of The Sunday Punch in Nigeria. She started her journalism career in 2004 at the Sun Newspaper and moved to News Star Newspaper in 2007 as a senior correspondent. She joined The Punch Newspaper in 2009 and was the sub-assistant editor for news and politics till 2012.

In 2012 Ogunseye received a Role Model Award from the department of biochemistry at the University of Lagos and a Distinguished Role Model Award from the university's department of mathematics. She was also awarded Punch Staff of the Year and was named Child-Friendly Reporter of the Year by the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME).

Editor in Chief, Nation Media Group, Kenya

Tom Mshindi, an accomplished journalist, started his career with the Nation Group in 1986, and rose to become the Managing Editor of the Daily Nation and later the Chief Operating Officer of the Nation Media Group before taking over the Editorial leadership of the Group in 2015. In between, he has been the Managing Director of Monitor Publications Ltd in Uganda;  Chief Communication Officer of United Nations Children’s Fund and CEO of The Standard Group.  In his current role, he is leading the transition of the NMG newsrooms and Editorial processes to respond to the challenges and opportunities in the digital space.

Francis Munywoki is the Managing Director, Print Business and Director of Innovation at The Standard Group, a leading media house in Kenya.

Culturally sensitive, commercially astute and results driven, Francis has spearheaded global initiatives that have leveraged revenue growth and improved customer service in multinational corporations including The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo and Barclays Bank.

Francis holds an MBA from London Business School, and also attended The Wharton School in the United States. He holds a bachelors degree in Electrical & Communications Engineering from Moi University, Kenya. 

Executive Chairman, Independent Media, and Founder & Chairman, Sekunjalo Group, South Africa

Dr. Iqbal Survé

President Nelson Mandela in 1997 made an impassioned plea for black professionals to enter the mainstream economy of South Africa to bring about meaningful transformation of the social and economic landscape in order to redress the economic legacy of apartheid. This resulted in Dr. Survé leaving his first love medicine, and founding the Sekunjalo Group, which is today wholly owned by the Survé family. Today Sekunjalo is one of Africa’s most successful Investment Holding Groups with a portfolio of 176 investments and a net asset value exceeding $3.5 billion.

Sekunjalo’s investment portfolio includes Oil and Gas, Food, Fishing, Aquaculture, Power, Resources, Transport and Mobility, Telecoms, Civil Security and Defense, Media, Technology, Bio-technology, Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals and Asset Management. Sekunjalo pioneers many social impact investment initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The story of Africa’s rising is an important narrative that The Survé family and Sekunjalo have committed to by investing in media on the African continent. In South Africa, Sekunjalo has acquired Independent Media (20 major titles, more than 6 million daily print readers and 3 million online viewers).

Two important initiatives which the Survé family and Sekunjalo has funded and committed to are: the launch of The African Independent (AI), the first continent wide print newspaper (distributed to 40 countries in Africa) which is also accompanied by the online website

The second major initiative is the launch of The African News Agency (ANA) to provide the first news and content syndication service by Africans for an African and global audience. ANA’s success is unprecedented in African media in that it recently placed a minority shareholding of 10% with international investors at a company valuation of a billion dollars (six months after its launch).

Dr. Iqbal Survé is a medical doctor born and educated in South Africa. He was affectionately known as the “Struggle Doctor” because of his provision of medical care towards victims of apartheid brutality including those imprisoned on the infamous Robben Island such as Nelson Mandela on his release from Robben Island in February 1990.

Head of Digital, The Tiso Blackstar Group (former: Times Media Group), South Africa

Lisa MacLeod is Head of Digital at Times Media Group in South Africa. She was previously GM of Digital for Media24.com. A former head of operations for ft.com and Managing Editor of the Financial Times, she now oversees the operational aspects of moving Times Media to a true digital first environment.

As Managing Editor, she managed the staffing, strategic planning and budgetary functions for the FT’s editorial department globally.

MacLeod joined the FT in 2003 during which time she has worked on various strategic newsroom integration and reorganisation projects. Prior to becoming managing editor, she was chief production editor, running the editorial development, support and training functions of the FT as well as overseeing the daily publishing requirements of both the website and newspaper. MacLeod was also a production editor and a commissioning editor on the special reports sections.

Chairman, SOICO Group, Mozambique

Dr. Daniel David, Mozambican, Chairman of Group SOICO – Sociedade Independente de Comunicação, Limited,  the unique media group in the country that brings the TV channel (“STV” in 2002), STV News that broadcast 24 hours a day for Mozambique  and abroad (STV Notícias 2014), Radio station (“SFM” in 2004) and daily Newspaper (“O País” in 2005) and O País Digital, a digital version that allows the paper to be read anywhere in the world.

He is CEO of  DHD – Consulting & Holding, Limited, a holding company with investments on media, IT, Real Estates, Banking and is the President of the Chamber of Commerce Mozambique-Portugal.

In 1998, was elected Vice-President of URTNA (Union of the Radios and Televisions of Africa) and he had special appearances in  United Nations Forum on TV and Radio – New York; Common Wealth Broadcast Convention – Cape Town; SABA – Southern African Broadcast Association.

He holds a degree in Administration and Management of Companies by Universidade Politécnica and attended the Management course at UNISA University in South Africa (Advanced Executive Programmer).

Peter has worked at every level in Piano and with customers all over the world, from Brazil to Poland. This makes him a true expert on paid content trends across the world, including the new challenge to drive mobile payments.

Deputy Managing Editor, Folha de S.Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil

Leonardo is deputy managing editor at Folha de S.Paulo, the newspaper with the largest digital readership in Brazil. Founded 95 years ago, Folha reaches 40 million readers per month and is part of Grupo Folha, one of the largest media groups in Brazil, which includes UOL, the main internet portal. Folha was the first newspaper in Brazil to publish online content in real time and also the first to implement the paywall system on its website.   Leonardo is currently responsible for Folha's digital strategy. During his 19 years with the publication, he has also held a variety of management roles, including Home Page editor, Front Page editor, Technology editor, London correspondent and deputy editor for politics, international, culture and sports.

Esmaré heads Media24, the leading South African media company which spans traditional and digital media, distribution, book publishing, ecommerce, job classifieds and ecommerce fulfilment. She has served as Editor in Chief of Huisgenoot, You and Drum at Media24 Family Magazines. She has also worked as an assistant news editor and as a political journalist.

This allows millions of Africans with no internet access to benefit from all the educational, social and economic advantages that being connected brings.

Head of Video department, 24sata, Croatia

Matej is digital enthusiast, he is Head of Video department in 24sata science 2015, leading Croatian daily newspaper. Matej is responsible for video production for all of 24sata online channels. Matej applied his own project idea to Styria Innovation incubator. He won the challenge. The idea is to creat unique YouTube channel that connects all the best regional YouTubers and bloggers. Project has break even in just two months.

Before joining 24sata, Matej was New Media Producer for Nova TV, leading broadcaster in the country, he was responsible for their news website which won web top 100 award in 2011 for best online news portal.

Executive Director of Europe and Africa, WAN-IFRA, Germany

As Director of Europe and Africa for the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), Ralf is responsible for the organisation's numerous activities in the region. He has over a decade of experience in digital media working in varied roles. After completing a journalistic apprenticeship at a regional newspaper, Ralf began his career as an editor and editorial team leader for T-Online in Germany. He went on to hold leadership positions at Coop Press, ETH Zurich, Information Architects and Denon Allmedia in Switzerland. Ralf has a Masters Degree in Political Science and Rhetoric from the University of Tübingen.

Peter Zollman

Peter has been in the news business for 35 years, and been actively involved in interactive media for more than 20 years. He is executive editor and publisher of Classified Intelligence Report, and has written many industry "white papers" and special reports about interactive media and classified ads. Zollman has consulted with media groups, trade associations, broadcasters, magazines and others to help develop successful interactive media services. He speaks often at major industry conferences.

Director, Global Advisory - WAN-IFRA, Germany

Ben is a leading expert on digital media, and at WAN-IFRA he has the task of providing independent advice on digital strategy and organisational change. He will also lead the various WAN-IFRA initiatives to support the media industry in its transformation.

Previously, he was Shaw Media's Chief Digital Officer, and focused in driving digital revenue and audience for their digital products in the United States. Shaw was also the company’s CTO and previously IT Director. He oversaw the alignment of all technologies to Shaw’s audience and revenue growth strategies. He was also actively involved in optimizing Shaw Media's over 100 print and digital publication products and workflows. He is a licensed Apple iOS Developer and an Apple Certified Help Desk Specialist.

Peter Lamb

Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Lamb is a Strategy Consultant, now living in Miami, Florida, and specialising in media companies. "The goal of my consulting practice is to utilise the sophisticated strategic marketing principles and techniques, learned while doing my MBA at Harvard Business School, meshing them with a hands-on sales approach, to generate new revenue streams for publications and websites. ROI is achieved by focusing on NEW-NEW revenue ... from customers that have never used our products before: print or online."
