Mathias Oliver Christian Döpfner (born 15 January 1963 in Bonn, Germany) is Chairman of the Board of Axel Springer and President of the Federation of German Newspaper Publishers.
Mathias Döpfner grew up in Offenbach am Main. His mother was a housewife and his father was Dieter C. Döpfner, university professor for architecture and from 1966 to 1970 director of the Offenbach Werkkunstschule. Döpfner studied musicology, German and theater studies in Frankfurt and Boston. In 1990 he was appointed Dr. phil.
He began his career in 1982 as a music critic of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Döpfner changed to Gruner + Jahr in 1992, initially as an employee of the board member Axel Ganz in Paris, later he became assistant to the CEO Gerd Schulte-Hillen. In April 1994, Döpfner became editor-in-chief of the weekly Wochenpost. In 1996, he took over the chief editor's office of the Hamburger Morgenpost. In March 1998 he switched to the daily newspaper Die Welt as chief editor. In July 2000, Döpfner became a member of the Management Board of Axel Springer. Since October 2000, he has also served as a board member for newspapers, since January 2002 Döpfner has served as chairman of the board. Under his leadership, revenue from digital activities increased.
