    Justin Arenstein is a veteran South African investigative journalist and media entrepreneur. He is founder of Code4Africa and is behind impactAFRICA, the continent’s largest fund for data-driven storytelling.

    He is an internationally recognised expert in data-driven journalism and related new media technologies. Arenstein co-founded the pioneering independent news wire agency African Eye News Service (AENS). AENS and Arenstein have received a string of international awards for their investigative exposés into government corruption and social justice issues. This includes the Knight International Journalism Award in 2000. Arenstein was also a 2009-2010 ICFJ Knight Fellow at Stanford University, where he explored social network analysis strategies for investigative journalism, as well as strategies to help independent grassroots media in Africa exploit the mobile web.

    He serves as a consulting strategist on journalistic innovation for Google, and on the boards of a number of media industry entities and related press freedom bodies. He is a former member of the Press Council of South Africa, where he helped reform the Press Code and its press oversight mechanisms.

    When Atelach Alemu Argaw arrived in Schibsted, in early 2016, she started from scratch, building a team working with natural languages processing (NLP) and image recognition. Now they’re part of realizing Schibsted as a tech-based company. Her team builds state-of-the-art models and services, using data from users, and makes them available within Schibsted. NLP is an AI-based technology aiming to get computers to understand how humans speak, or write. Atelach’s team has built a model for labeling the intent of a message. This means that you can understand when buyers at a marketplace are interested in an item that already has been sold, and assist the seller in answering them. When it comes to image processing the team has, for instance, made it possible to show similar items to buyers. 

    Atelach holds a PhD in Computer Science at the University of Gothenburgh and she has collaborated extensively at the Laboratory for Data Mining and Decision Analysis (DMDA) part of the Department of Computer and System Sciences at Stockholm University

    Chris Arsenault

    Chris est investisseur en entreprises technologiques en démarrages et entrepreneur depuis deux décennies. He has led several award-wining campaigns that have been acclaimed in prestigious national and international festivals, such as Cannes Lions, Clio, Effies and DIENTE (Círculo de Creativos Argentinos) among others. He has also been part of the jury at Young Lions, DIENTE and Effies. Since 2015 he serves as a member of Executive Committee of INTERACT (Argentine Union of Digital Agencies).

    Astrid Ascar has 29 years’ experience in the media industry. She began her career as a radio and TV journalist and producer, and started working in the digital media and marketing space in 2004. She has worked for media brands including DStv, Carte Blanche, Summit TV (now Business Day TV), The Home Channel, CNBC Africa, SABC TV, SAfm, Highveld and in more recent years co-hosting an online radio business show on Hot919 fm. 

    Astrid’s consulting work focus for the past 10 years has been digital and integrated marketing and communications strategies, content creation and production, key messaging and copywriting, website audits including UI and UX consulting, helping clients implement plans across owned, earned and paid digital platforms, and using data analytics to generate business insights. She also MCs, gives talks, and facilitates workshops and conferences, and offers training in digital media and marketing, key message crafting, media interview skills, presentation skills, and crisis comms. 

    Since March this year Astrid has been fulfilling the role of Chief Strategy Officer for the Wunderman South Africa group.

    Gunilla Asker, CEO of the Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) since 2009, has been responsible for developing and implementing SvD's multichannel strategy, which aims to meet the new market and business needs that the digital development implies. She first entered the media sector in 2005, joining SvD as Marketing and Sales Director. 

     After graduating from Uppsala University in 1988 with an International MBA, Asker joined Unilever as a trainee and then spent 13 years with them working in the areas of strategy, branding, marketing and sales. She was later Vice President for Marketing and Corporate Communications at SJ AB (Swedish Rail) before becoming Division Manager of Custom Research at Research International.

    Andreas Aspegren

    Educated at Stockholm University and the Academy of Journalism in Stockholm, Aspegren has a background as tv reporter, presenter and editor at SVT (Swedish Public Service TV) as well as being a news reporter and freelance reporter for Kristianstadsbladet, Sveriges Radio, Dagens Nyheter and FLT. He's held positions as editor and editor-in-chief of a number of online properties including SVT.se, Koll.se, Passagen.se and Bonnier Net. Aspegren has been with Aftonbladet, Sweden's largest online news publication, since 2007, where he's worked in various roles within business development and site management.

Her research focuses on the Kenyan Westgate shootings and how Twitter was used as the primary source of news and communication. Her professional career has included her role as Editor of Burn Media, a multimedia digital publishing house which focuses on the intersection of technology and media, and entrepreneurship. An expert on Africa’s tech and startup scene, Atagana is currently the Head of Communications & Public Affairs for Google South Africa.

He’s been a lead anchor on TV and radio for BBC News for many years covering Brexit, the recent German and Dutch elections, the death of Nelson Mandela and many many other stories. Ros is also the founder of the 50:50 Project which has become the largest gender-balancing initiative that’s ever happened at the BBC and is driving an increase in women contributors across many BBC programmes.

    Matías Attwell has 21+ years of experience at Latin America's Internet industry and currently he's the Head of Large Publisher Solutions for Spanish Speaking Latin America at Google. He's worked as a journalist since the early beginnings of commercial websites in Latin America. In 1997 he was the Editorial Director at NewsClick, one of the pioneering services of information on the Internet across Argentina. From 1998 to 2000 he was the Editorial Director for Latin America at El Sitio, part of the team that lead the company's transformation into its IPO. He ocasionally teaches at FLACSO, where he jointly led a digital culture and intellectual property seminar, as well as in MIND/UdeSA.
