    Now at the forefront of the BBC News’ mobile video output, Sarah Austin has a career that has spanned radio, TV and digital.

    As mobile editor for the BBC World Service, Sarah is leading the strategic direction for video across 40 language services.  The World Service is undergoing a huge expansion and transformation as it adapts to the digital news habits of younger consumers in emerging markets, and mobile video is central to the ambition.

    Previously, Sarah has worked as a video journalist, commissioner and output editor and in the last year played a leading role on the team that launched the new BBC News video app, which revolutionised the look and feel of BBC News’ digital offerings.

    Lara Ayoub is a Digital & Social Media Consultant/Trainer with over 13 years experience in the field. Her current and most recent consultancies include the International Centre for Migration Policy Development(ICMPD), International Labour Organization (ILO) , the American Embassy In Jordan, GIZ ,Image Nation and Ro’ya TV.

    Lara is also the Co-Founder of SADAQA, a Jordanian NGO established in 2011 with the main objective of increasing the economic participation of Jordanian women in the work force by advocating for nationwide compliance with Article 72 of the Labour Law which calls for the provision of daycare at the work place.

    In 2013 she completed the Harvard executive leadership course: “Leading, Organizing and Action: Leading Change” which lead her to adopt this as SADAQA’s methodology. She went on to becoming a Harvard Teaching Fellow for the LOALC 2015 online course as part of Professor Marshall Ganz ’s teaching team.

    Between 2013 -2016, Lara established Ro’ya TV’s digital and social media department as well as the digital news department which included an Arabic news website ( royanews.tv) and a dedicated app. She also designed a “Four Pillar Consortium” consisting of a creative lab, content/production distribution center, academy and talent management department which aims at cultivating new talents and content in MENA. She is also a certified TV producer from the London School of Media, Film and TV.

    For nearly 10 years, Lara was the Digital Media Director of Jordan’s first Arabic independent daily newspaper Alghad (www.alghad.com) an award winning news portal in Asia and Middle East. In parallel to Alghad , she also managed the digital auction/classified website of Al-Waseet. In 2011, she introduced video journalism to Alghad’s electronic news outlet where she produced over 300 videos working together with it print journalists.

    She is also a member of the Young Entrepreneur Association (YEA), Vital Voices, Leading Change Network, Business Professional Women Association and an Alumni of the FORTUNE/ Vital Voices Global Women Mentoring program. She was recently selected as one of the top 100 strategic global women leaders by Vital Voices. Today she continues to serve as a mentor and coach to young entrepreneurs and emerging leaders.

    Since 2015 Dr. Felix Badura is member of the board of IAB Austria, where he chairs the "Advertising quality" working group. He is working in the online industry since 2008, where he has co-founded Meetrics GmbH, a company that focuses on ad verification as well as the algorithmic detection of reading behaviour on online news portals such as Spiegel Online. Prior to his time at Meetrics Mr. Badura worked as a researcher in the field of Yield Management at WU Vienna.

    Gerard Baker is Editor in Chief of The Wall Street Journal and Managing Editor of Dow Jones, roles he assumed on January 1, 2013. Mr. Baker is responsible for all global newsgathering and editorial operations for The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires.

    Mr. Baker previously served as Deputy Editor in Chief of The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires.

    Before joining the Journal, Mr. Baker was the U.S. Editor and an Assistant Editor of The Times of London, where he wrote news and commentary. He also oversaw U.S. coverage for both the print and online editions.

    From 1994 to 2004, Mr. Baker worked for the Financial Times, first as Tokyo Correspondent, and then, from 1998 to 2002, as Washington Bureau Chief. From 2002 to 2004, he was the FT’s Chief U.S. Commentator and an Associate Editor.

    Prior to the FT, Mr. Baker worked for the BBC from 1988 to 1994, as a producer, then as U.S. producer, and finally as Economics Correspondent for TV and radio.

    Mr. Baker’s work has appeared in several other publications, and he has been a frequent television and radio contributor around the world. He started his career in the financial sector, first as an analyst at the Bank of England, then as an economist at Lloyds Bank in the City of London.

    Mr. Baker holds a First Class Honours Degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Corpus Christi College, Oxford University.

    Dr Matt Baker is a biophysicist in Sydney at the EMBL Australia Node for Single Molecule Science at the University of New South Wales, Australia. Matt completed his DPhil at Oxford University as a John Monash Scholar studying the bacterial flagellar motor that makes nearly all bacteria swim and now investigates the origins and self assembly of complex molecular machines.   Matt is a former Top 5 Under 40 Scientist in Residence at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), where he has produced and presented content for Radio National's Health Report, Science Show, Saturday Extra, and Earshot, and he is the regular science correspondent for ABC Nightlife broadcast throughout Australia on ABC Local Radio.    In 2016 Matt was embedded as Australia's inaugural Google Newslabs Fellow at Fairfax Media, home of the Sydney Morning Herald. There he successfully built a recommendation engine for similar content to increase reader on-site time, and analysed changes in Sydney's nightlife using transport data.

    Sri. Unni Balakrishnan was born in 1969 in Alappuzha district of Kerala. He started his career in 1994 as a Sub-Editor in a reputed Malayalam Socio political Weekly – Kalakaumudi. In 1996 he joined Asianet Television as Sub-Editor and played an important role in establishing the first private satellite channel in Malayalam. In 1998 he was transferred to the New Delhi Bureau of Asianet. In the years that rolled by Sri. Unni Balakrishnan worked in the New Delhi bureau of Asianet in various capacities as Bureau Chief, Regional Editor etc. He was in New Delhi from year 1998 to 2010. While working in  the Delhi Bureau, he got many opportunities to report many important incidents/ events like the Kandahar Plane hijack, Kargil war, Delhi serial bomb blasts, Mumbai terrorist attack, General elections etc. In 2002 he visited Islamabad with the then Prime Minister Sri. A B Vajpayee and reported SAARC summit. He had visited Paris and reported the Indo French nuclear summit in 2005, the USA again in 2005 and reported the UN General Council and in 2010 he reported the Indo- Arab summit all accompanying the then Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh.     Nkiru Balonwu is CEO of the Spinlet Group. Spinlet is a digital media distribution company, focusing on Africa-centric content. It operates Africa’s leading store for legal sales of home-grown music, accessible globally through mobile apps (iOS and Android) and browsers (www.spinlet.com). Before her appointment as CEO, Nkiru worked at different times as General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer within the company.

    She has more than 15 years’ experience advising on transactions spanning across technology, intellectual property and media and has taught law at the University of Lagos. Nkiru has a keen interest in development policy particularly as it relates to empowering women and girls through ICT. She is a strong believer and advocate of music and film as tools of soft power and catalysts for social change and economic development in Africa.

    She holds a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, a master’s degree from the University College London and is admitted to the bar in New York, Nigeria, and England & Wales.

    Trushar Barot is the Digital Launch Editor, Indian Languages, for BBC World Service.
    He oversaw the digital launches of the BBC’s new services in Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu

    launch. He is a recent Nieman Visiting Fellow at Harvard, researching the use of Voice
    AI in newsrooms and the potential implementation of the technology for news discovery in

    As part of Yahoo! International UED team, Alberto led the design of global media products. Experience that drove him to explore the entrepreneurial route and start his own business, Webjam, considered, at the time, one of the most promising Internet start-ups in Europe.
    After becoming part of the senior management team of the digital branch of ITV, the largest commercial broadcaster in the UK; leading the strategy of a global media start-up and establishing strategic and creative direction for advertisement and retail with Cheil/Samsung; Alberto has decided to moved back to Spain to set up Meaning, a consultancy firm devoted to the orchestration of meaningful customer experiences for brands.

    Endy M. Bayuni is chief editor of The Jakarta Post, Indonesia’s leading independent English language newspaper. 

    He has held his current position since August 2004, having worked his way up the newspaper’s career ladder since 1991. His previous stints in the newspaper included production manager/night editor, national editor, managing editor and deputy chief editor.

    Mr. Bayuni writes regular and widely read columns in the newspaper commenting on the Indonesian domestic politics, including political Islam and foreign policy conduct. The Jakarta Post is part of a small circle of critical but constructive media in Indonesia. The unprecedented freedom of speech and freedom of the media that came after the downfall of President Soeharto’s regime in 1998 has allowed the press in Indonesia to play its role as the fourth estate, providing democratic checks and balances on the government. Mr. Bayuni and his editorial team have been pushing the envelope through the newspaper’s vigorous reporting. He began his career as a cub reporter for The Jakarta Post in 1983, and between 1984 and 1991 worked as the Indonesian correspondent, initially for Reuters and later for Agence France Presse (AFP).

    Mr. Bayuni was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 2003/4 where he spent a considerable time attending classes at the Kennedy School of Government. He was a Jefferson Fellow at the East West Center in the fall of 1999. He has a bachelor of arts degree in economics which he received in 1981 from Kingston University in Surrey, UK. He is an expert of Global Expert Finder, a project of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations.

    He is also former New York Bureau Chief for News Corp who covered the September 11 terror attacks in 2001. He edited The Saturday Daily Telegraph in Sydney before moving to Perth to play a key role in transforming of two of Australian best media brands – The West Australian and 7 News.

    Kevin Beatty

    Kevin was appointed to the Board of DMGT plc in 2004, having joined the Group in 1996. Prior to this, Kevin was managing director of the Scottish Daily Record and Sunday Mail Ltd, which at that time was part of Mirror Group plc.

    With the Group for 20 years, Kevin has been managing director of The Mail on Sunday; managing director of the Evening Standard and London Metro; chief operating officer of Associated New Media; and managing director of Northcliffe Newspapers.

    Kevin is now Chief Executive of dmg media, the consumer media operation of DMGT plc, which publishes the Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday, Metro, Mail Online, Mail Plus, Metro digital editions and Elite Daily. dmg media also has minority interests in the London Evening Standard, Wowcher, a daily deals business and a number of e-commerce business.

    He is a board member of the NMA and represents the UK publishing industry on the executive council of WAN-IFRA; he is a non-executive director of the PA Group where he chairs the nominations committee and is a member of the remuneration committee. Recently he has been appointed Chairman of the RFC, the body that funds IPSO (Independent Press Standards Organisation).

    Her focus is on bringing the best of Google to news and publishing partners in the region and making sure that the unique needs of the region are well reflected in Google’s approach to the news ecosystem.

    As a former journalist in magazine and digital newsrooms Kate is committed to using storytelling to drive real business outcomes, for Google and it’s news partners in APAC. In her time she's created new teams, walked in to manage old ones, owned P&Ls and operated in environments where she had influence but no control. All of which makes her excited and empathic to the challenges faced in the modern news ecosystem.

    When not working, Kate enjoys to spend time with her husband and two amusing children; travelling and perfecting the mix of a good espresso martini.

    Kawaljit Singh Bedi is the Chief Technology Officer at NDTV Convergence (NDTV’s Digital Media Division) and Senior Vice President, Strategy for the NDTV group. Kawaljit has been with the NDTV Group for over 17 years and oversees technology, user-experience and product road-map for NDTV's websites and apps. He is also the Managing Director of Gadgets 360, India's largest technology and gadgets website.

    Kawaljit has won several international awards in the field of innovation including Commonwealth Broadcasting Association award for Innovative engineering and NAB International Broadcasting Excellence award. He and his team have also filed for multiple patents in the fields of digital media and broadcast engineering. He has been trained in digital journalism from the Thomson Foundation in Cardiff, UK.

    Jineth is currently Deputy Editor for EL TIEMPO newspaper. She's a journalist and international speaker about topics such as armed conflict, drug traffic and gender issues. She has published seven books. Her work has made her the recipient of several international awards such as the Premio Mundial al Coraje Periodístico and the Premio Internacional a la Mujer de Coraje.

    Jineth is a nominee the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize for her work in defense of womens rights as a result of her broad campaign against gender violence and impunity in Colombia, called 'No Es Hora De Callar' (It's not time to be silent), launched in 2009. That same year, her case went public: she had been kidnapped, tortured and abused because of her work as a reporter during Colombia's armed conflict.

    This campaign has helped many other women victims of violence. In 2013, Jineth was ackowledged as one of the 100 most influential journalists in the world covering war and violence, and the following year was amongst Colombia's most important leaders, selected by the prestigious Colombian Semana magazine and the Fundación Liderazgo y Democracia.

    She was part of the group of victims that participated in the current peace process taking place in Havana among the Colombian government and the FARC Armed Guerrilla. Last February, she received the Premio Nacional al Mérito Periodístico (National Award to the Journalistic Merit) for her more than 20 years of profesional trajectory.

    Fergus Bell

    Fergus Bell is an experienced digital journalist, editor and leading expert in digital newsgathering and the verification of user-generated content by news media. He is also a prominent advocate for higher industry standards relating to the ethical uses of UGC and social media.
    Fergus has experience in both the business and editorial sides of the industry, most recently heading up newsroom partnerships and innovation for SAM desk, a social newsgathering tool for newsrooms. Fergus joined SAM from the Associated Press where, as international social media and UGC editor, he led the global operation to source and verify user-generated content for all of the AP’s platforms.
    In October 2013 Fergus co-founded a committee for the Online News Association that has brought together leaders in the journalism community to explore the ethics and standards of UGC and digital newsgathering for the news industry. He is also founding member of the First Draft News coalition of UGC experts supported by the Google News Lab. Fergus is a graduate of the University of Leeds.
