  • Executive Editor, The Daily Nation, Nation Media Group, Kenya

    Pamella Makotsi Sittoni is a Kenyan journalist, with more than 20 years’ experience in the media in East Africa. Currently Executive Editor and Managing Editor of the Daily Nation, at the Nation Media Group (NMG), Ms Sittoni has held several leadership positions. She served as Managing Editor of NMG’s regional newspaper, The EastAfrican, from 2012 to 2018; and as Managing Editor of the Standard (2005 – 2006). From 2006 to 2012, she worked as a Communications Specialist at UNICEF Kenya where she was charged with advocacy for children and women. Ms Sittoni began her career at the Nation Media Group as a reporter in 1993 and rose to Chief Sub-editor. In 2003, she moved to the Standard Group as Deputy Managing Editor. In 2017, Ms Sittoni was named by the World Association of Newspapers, WAN-IFRA the Laureate of the Women in News Editorial Leadership Award for Sub-Saharan Africa. She is a Fellow of the Aspen Global Leadership Network, through the African Leadership Initiative. She holds a BA (Literature and Anthropology) and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Communication from the University of Nairobi, and a Masters in Communication from the University of Leicester.
  • Founding Editor and Director, the Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism, South Africa

    Mia Malan is the founding editor and director of the Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism in Johannesburg, South Africa. Bhekisisa has pioneered solutions journalism in the country and its reporting has helped to set the agenda on several social justice issues. Under Malan’s leadership, Bhekisisa’s online readership increased 30 fold and its donor funding eight fold between 2013 and 2019. During this period, the centre expanded from three to fifteen permanent and part-time staff. Malan has won more than 20 African journalism awards for her work and is a former fellow of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University. Prior to starting Bhekisisa, she was a Knight Journalism Fellow and journalism lecturer at Rhodes University. Between 2003 and 2006, Malan launched the first health journalism programme of the international media development organisation, Internews Network, in Kenya. During this time, she helped to develop a training curriculum that was also implemented in Nigeria, Ethiopia and India. Malan holds a Master’s Degree in Science Journalism from the University of Stellenbosch.

    Michael MaLoon is the News Media Alliance’s Vice President of Innovation. In this role, he works to further the collaboration, advocacy and advancement of the newspaper industry. Michael focuses on creating new strategic initiatives and designing unique partnerships that will propel innovation in the industry, working collaboratively with Alliance staff to execute strategic research and communications programs. In addition, he oversees communications and PR for the organization.

    Michael has built an extensive executive career in media, publishing and marketing, focused on research-driven product development to create growth. He most recently served as the director of sales and operations at The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle of Philanthropy, where he led the launch of a new Chronicle Unlimited program that generated important incremental revenue. His previous positions include consulting for NextGen Marketing Group, digital director of The Buffalo News, director of recruitment advertising for Newsday Media Group, president of CyberInk, a Times Publishing Co. subsidiary, and online director of The Observer-Dispatch.

    Under Michael’s leadership, The Buffalo News achieved aggressive revenue goals of more than 18 percentage points, including a nearly 23 percent increase in display advertising and 11 percent growth in digital classifieds. He also founded the subsidiary digital services agency Canalside Media, launched a new suite of mobile products and led the transition of all newspaper properties to a paid access model. Prior to this, as president of CyberInk, he increased online revenue for GoErie.com and its sister properties by more than 200 percent.

  • Digital Reporter, Nice Matin, France

    Aurore Malval is digital reporter at Nice-Matin, the largest regional daily newspaper publisher in South-East France, where she is part of the "Impact-journalism" team. This new digital offer was build from scratch after the employees raised enough funding to acquire the regional group Nice-Matin (which also publishes Var-Matin and Monaco-Matin). She works on producing innovative storytelling forms and new ways of engaging the audience.

    Established in 1944, the Nice Matin group is the largest regional daily newspaper publisher in South-East France. The group publishes the Nice-Matin, Var-Matin and Monaco-Matin daily newspapers. In 2014, its employees raised enough funding to acquire the regional group and built a new digital offer from scratch. More on their story here.

    Katherine Manual

    As SVP of Innovation at Thomson Reuters, Katherine Manuel is helping the company transition from an international holding company to a global innovator creating partnerships and growth opportunities for its customers, employees and shareholders. Prior to this role, Katherine was a member of the Corporate Strategy team, where she worked with corporate leadership to create a long-term strategy based on market understanding and access to customers and products. Katherine has been with Thomson Reuters for nearly 11 years, holding senior positions within both the Legal and Tax & Accounting businesses as well as leading Technology Strategy & Enterprise Architecture for Healthcare & Science. From there, she joined the Office of the CEO, where she worked on various projects within the News division and the company-wide Transformation program. Before joining Thomson Reuters, Katherine worked for Accenture, focusing on the Media, Entertainment and Telecom industries. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Davidson College and a Masters of Business Administration from Duke University.     Seng Mai Maran is an award-winning journalist/photographer and editor-in-chief of Myitkyina News
    Journal in Kachin state in Myanmar. In 2014 the 28-year- old co-founded the paper, the only regional
    independent newspaper in the state. She has gained wide recognition for her work addressing
    women issues in conflict areas, such as drug abuse, discrimination and violence.  In February, she
    won the prestigious first prize at the Yangon Photo Festival for her photo essay about female
    soldiers fighting for the Kachin Independent Army. Seng Mai has background form BBC Burmese
    Radio and various newspapers in Myanmar. She has a college-diploma in computer science.

    Mariana Marcaletti is BuzzFeed's International News Coordinator. She has been a digital journalist for the past 10 years, she was born in Argentina and she has lived in New York for the past 2 years, when she moved to pursue a Fulbright-sponsored Master in Entrepreneurial Journalism at CUNY.
    Before BuzzFeed, she worked as a digital producer at The Washington Post and last year she launched a collaborative site with news in English about the region, called Latin American Radar. She concentrated on cultural adaptation and linguistics at Google, where she oversaw the quality of Spanish language in over 100 products and major campaigns, like Project Loon.
    She collaborated for the BBC's World Service Radio 3, The Independent blogs and La Nación digital in Argentina.
    She was part of the permanent staff of TN.com.ar, the website of Argentina's most-seen 24-hour news channel and of the Buenos Aires Herald, the only English language newspaper in the country.
    She won several writing awards (Foreign Press Association in New York, and state-funded essay contests in Argentina and also in Buenos Aires city), and she has given workshops and consultancy in several cities in Latin America and the U.S. She was the main speaker in Latin America's Hacks/Hackers bootcamp in Chile and Argentina, and she presented for Artear in Grupo Clarín, as well as in the last edition of the Ibero American Colloquium in Austin, Texas University.

As a result, Figaro Group is able to provide its advertisers (i.e. premium sales, data, programmatic, trading desk, etc.) with a complete and innovative range of digital solutions.

    Ann Marinovich is the Vice President, Advertising Products and Strategy of Forbes Media.  She is responsible for leading the company’s digital, mobile and print advertising products and strategy across Forbes’ integrated product line. 
     
    Marinovich joined Forbes in 2003 as a sales assistant in the San Francisco office.  Since then she has worked in their New York, Los Angeles and Chicago offices in a variety of sales and strategy positions.  Most recently she was the Vice President Sales of the Central Region, where she oversaw the advertising sales efforts in the Midwest.
     
    Marinovich currently lives in New York City.  She is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelors of Arts in Anthropology.

    Camila Marquês is Head of Digital and Audience at Folha de S.Paulo, responsible for the interface of newsroom with IT and Commercial. She has a degree in journalism with a postgraduate degree in economics at FGV.  At Folha since 2004, she coordinated the  fusion of digital and print writing, and was editor of the Technology section and TV Folha, among other positions.

    Sarah is the London-based audience development editor for The Wall Street Journal, tasked with growing audiences in Europe Middle East and Africa. Her main focus is on growing quality traffic, subscribers and brand reach through social media, SEO, emails and alerts, in-person engagement (events) and partnerships. From December to April she was a launch editor on Snapchat Discover, commissioning and editing news to lead WSJ's Snapchat edition (US only). Since September 2015 she works also as a visiting lecturer at City University. In the mean time, she also co-runs the social media module on the MA in interactive journalism (two hours a week teaching time).

    Sarah, co-organises Hacks/Hackers London, bringing together journalists (hacks) and technologists (hackers) to collaborate and share ideas. She founded Hacks/Hackers Brighton. As part of her acitivites, she is also studing Modern Standard Arabic at advanced level.

    Before starting at WSJ, she was a technology editor at Journalism.co.uk. She reported on innovations in the digital news industry, co-organised digital journalism conference news:rewired, and managed a revenue-generating training programme.

    Developing an expertise in the digital news industry has led Sarah to deliver numerous presentations. She has been facilitating sessions at MozFest (the Mozilla Festival) in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. She has been presenting at the World Editors Forum in Bangkok, Digital Journalism Days in Warsaw, Swedish Radio in Stockholm, the International Journalism Festival in Perugia, Digiday in Bologna and ONA and a number of other conferences in London.

    Her background started as a broadcast journalist, as a breakfast newsreader, producer and reporter. Also, she worked as a local newspaper reporter and have made a series of documentary films about Morocco.
  • Digital Media Consultant, Argentina

    Hernán began his digital career in HAM RADIO, an offline internet service provider. In 1999 he entered Compaq LA in order to build and implement the E-Business in Latin America. Afterwards, he worked in Collectivemind Inc. as the Vice President of Business Development for the region and the hispanic market in the USA.

    In 2001 he founded ‘Technology for Solutions’, a project that focuses in Content Management System (CMS) for digital media. Participating in more than 50 projects of the segment, he currently serves as CEO, Product Director and media consultant in the region. Hernán Marsili has a degree in Applied Psychology specializing in Marketing. He graduated from the University of Palermo in Buenos Aires.

    With more than 20 years of experience in the media industry, Ernesto is currently responsible for the digital content strategy of LA NACIÓN, where he also led the recent launch of LN+, a television channel. Previously, he was Marketing & Business Manager for all platforms and Newsroom Secretary for the Entertainment and Society sections in the same newspaper. For five years, he served as Editorial Director of Rolling Stone magazine for South America. He began his career as an Editor in the youth supplement of the newspaper Clarín.

    Michael is a member of the chief editorial team at Tages-Anzeiger, one of the best known daily newspapers in Switzerland, and also leads the departments Digital and Newsnet which is a coalition of Swiss newspaper websites. Michael holds this role since 2013. He is responsible for the online content of the Newsnet sites, digital developments and the innovation team. From 1993 to 2002, Marti was a journalist at SonntagsZeitung, Das Magazin and Facts. In 2002, he became a member of the founding team of NZZ am Sonntag. In 2004, Marti joined the weekly published and politics and economics oriented magazine Facts as a member of the chief editorial team, where he managed the culture and society department. Four years later, in 2008, he was appointed deputy chief editor of Tages-Anzeiger Online and Newsnet.

    Joe Martin

    Joe Martin is Vice President of commercial partnerships at Dow Jones in APAC. He is responsible for driving digital membership growth for The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones through strategic partnerships.

    Previously, Joe was Senior Relationship Manager for The Wall Street Journal and Financial News based in London where he oversaw the corporate sales operation across EMEA. Joe first started at Dow Jones in 2012 before relocating to Hong Kong in 2015 where he is now based.
