    Lisa Mitchell leads editorial for Oovvuu. Oovvuu is a partnership between 100 broadcasters and publishers to embed a contextually relevant video in every article in the world using AI. Its mission is to repatriate $20 billion in advertising from Facebook and Google back to journalism. Previously, Lisa was a senior manager at the Press Association, MSN and the BBC.

    Andy, Mitchell

    Andy Mitchell is Director of Global News Partnerships for Facebook based in the NY office. He joined Facebook in October 2010. In his role, Mitchell oversees the news and publishing vertical for Facebook globally.  Currently Mitchell’s working on Facebook’s evolving partnerships with article and video publishers with a focus on migrating content to Facebook with the business model to support it.

    Since joining Facebook, Mitchell’s role has included working on FB Platform, specifically social plugins (Like, Comments, Share) and more traditional partnerships with media organizations including broadcast Partnerships with NBC for the London Olympics Games; CNN for a cross platform global partnership for the US general election; and a debate with NBC News featuring the Republican nominees in New Hampshire.

    In addition to broadcast Partnerships, Mitchell’s role is to work with publishers to leverage the Facebook Platform and News Feed to maximize engagement, referrals and distribution. This includes traditional companies like CNN, NBC News and The New York Times as well as social publishers including Buzzfeed, Vice and The Huffington Post. Immediately prior to joining Facebook, Mitchell served as Vice President of Business Development for The Daily Beast. He was responsible for marketing and strategic communications, mobile, SEO, social media strategy, content distribution partnerships.  

    Mitchell had a 15-year tenure at CNN Worldwide in a variety of roles. His last position was vice president of digital marketing and development and a key member of the CNN Digital management team. Based in New York, Mitchell was directly responsible for trade and consumer marketing of CNN’s digital assets, including the No. 1 news and information site, CNN.com, and the company’s growth into mobile and other digital platforms. Additionally, Mitchell was responsible for developing partnerships to support multi-platform content distribution across CNN’s networks.

    Sam Mkokeli, an award-winning journalist and columnist, chairs the South African National Editors’ Forum’s media freedom sub-committee. He has been a journalist for almost two decades and has worked for South Africa’s leading newspaper brands, including Business Day and Sunday Times, where he held editorial executive roles. Those include the roles of News Editor/Assistant Editor and later Political Editor at Business Day – South Africa’s leading financial daily, and Cape Town Bureau Chief for the Sunday Times. He is now a specialist politics journalist for Bloomberg News, based in Johannesburg and covers mainly government affairs, political power and public policy.

    Koketso Moeti Founder Amandla.mobi

    Koketso Moeti has a long background in civic activism and has over the years worked at the intersection of governance, communication and citizen action. She currently serves as the founding executive director of amandla.mobi, a community of over 220,000 people working to turn every cellphone into a democracy-building tool to ensure that those most affected by injustice- low income Black women in particular- can take collective action on issues affecting our lives. In 2018 she was announced as an inaugural Obama Foundation fellow and the Waislitz Global Citizen award winner. This comes after being a 2017 Aspen Institute New Voices fellow. She is also the Deputy Chairperson of the SOS Coalition, a coalition of South African organisations committed to and campaigning for public broadcasting in the public interest. 

    When not working, Moeti can be found writing and has been published by a wide range of local and international media.

    Magdoom Mohamed joined WAN-IFRA as Business Development Manager, and grew up through several positions to Managing Director in April 2008.  He is responsible for WAN-IFRA’s business in South Asia. He also guided WAN-IFRA’s entry into the Middle East during a brief stint in 2008.

    Before joining WAN-IFRA, he was with The Times of India group, managing the local brand of the group in Chennai.

    An MBA from Madras University, Magdoom did a Senior Management Programme at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India’s premier B-School. He followed it up with a Media Leadership Programme at Indian School of Business, Hyderabad in 2010.

  • Psychosocial Support Consultant, Singapore Red Cross Academy

    Muhamad Haikel is the Psychosocial Support Consultant with Singapore Red Cross Academy. He champions the Centre for Psychosocial Support and the Centre for Emergency and Disaster Management. He is responsible for trainer management, curriculum development and conducting psychosocial support courses such as psychological first aid and community-based psychosocial support. He also oversees the development and implementation of the humanitarian short courses.

    Apart from being a Certified Stress Management Consultant, he is also a Registered Social Worker-Provisional and a Registered Nurse with strong interest and passion in mental health and psychosocial support. His training is in mental health, social work, psychosocial support, applied positive psychology, disaster management, crisis management, applied suicide intervention, volunteer management and nursing.

    Haikel participates actively in the Ministry of Health (MOH) Singapore, Disasters & Civil Emergencies Exercises, i.e. "NorthStar 9" and "Blue Dolphin" to manage crisis events and provide practical first aid and psychological first aid to the affected persons. He has been deployed for various humanitarian disaster relief and peace-time missions locally and regionally to countries such as Nepal, Pakistan, Indonesia and Vietnam.

    Syamil Fahim Mohamed Fahim
    Syamil Fahim currently serves as the Chief Operating Officer for the Kumpulan Media Karangkraf – Ultimate Group of Companies. Educated and graduated from the University of Misouri-Kansas City in 1996, in the field of Computer Science specialising in Telecommunications, he joined the group in August the same year as a management trainee. He has more than 20 years of working experience in the group. In the beginning, his first assignment was to head the Graphics Department Unit of Karangkraf. From there, his career in the publishing industry started. Heading the Graphics Department, he re-engineered the workflow from single up to eight- up CTF workflow, and soon after, a full PDF workflow and migrated the Desktop publishing system from QuarkExpress to Adobe Creative Suit solutions. He also formed the IT department for the group and launched Karangkraf’s first web portal,www.karangkraf.com, in December 2000. His experience includes heading the Print Division, Ultimate Print Sdn Bhd, for more than 14 years before given the bigger task of heading the newly-formed subsidiary, Grup Digital Karangkraf Sdn Bhd. Believing that Innovation and Technology is key to any organisation’s success, he has made the Group more technology-driven.

    Omar Mohammed is an ICFJ Knight International Journalism Fellow leading the launch of Code for Tanzania, which promotes data journalism and civic innovation as a means to strengthening journalistic storytelling and audience engagement.

    Mohammed is an experienced data journalist and digital strategist. ​In 2015, he helped launch Quartz Africa and worked as the platform's East Africa reporter based in Tanzania’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam. Prior to joining Quartz, he spent 2014-2015 as a Hubert H. Humphrey Fulbright Fellow at Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, where he researched sustainable financial models for doing digital business journalism. He currently helps to cover financial news for Bloomberg in East Africa's second largest economy.

    He previously served as a senior producer for the BBC Swahili Service’s weekly radio news magazine show, “Haba na Haba” (Little by Little) and co-created and hosted a news review show @Mgahawa on East Africa Television. His writing has appeared in The Arizona Republic, Global Voices, The East African, among others

    Madan Mohan Mohapatra, Head-Customer Strategy and CEO Future Media, brings with him a cumulative experience of over two decades. The period has seen him working across sectors as diverse as consumer research, television production, media planning and buying, marketing with retail at the core, activation, loyalty & analytics and business revival at market/store level. During these two decades of work, he has been not only responsible for setting up new businesses but also revising business across multiple verticals. His current role is two-fold – drawing up the customer strategy for Future Group in India and also building an asset monetization model (P&L responsibility) for the group.

    He has been fortunate to have worked in India during a critical phase when the new economy was just taking its baby steps. Sectors such as television, media and retail had transformed to align with a new, emerging consumer class and eventually to make way for a global Indian consumer. That gave Madan a first hand exposure to often working in large organizations, where the environment was no different from a start-up – enthusiastic, having a clear cost focus and very profit-driven. Cases in point would include stints in media agencies when television was a fledgling medium, witnessing the beginning of the cricket economy in India and later globally and perhaps most importantly, being a part of the retail story in India, where not just the ability but willingness to spend being the big story. At each stage, the evolution of the Indian consumer or shopper was at the core of it and the job on hand was to get key insights and building strategy to help in business by getting the customers inside the stores. This was greatly supplemented by travel across India during a critical phase when Future Group was expanding its retail presence. The experience of being on the shop floor has been one of the most insightful experiences. Of course, in a market as heterogeneous as India with varying consumer tastes coupled with an intensely complex media structure, he has managed to bring in consumers across store formats feeding into the large growth strategy of the group.

    For most Indians, the move to working for large multinational networks comes after the mandatory stint with the traditional Indian entrepreneur. In Madan’s case, it has been the other way but with a difference. The entrepreneur here is Mr. Kishore Biyani, a name synonymous with modern Indian retail, whose 2000+ stores on any given month sells products to over 40 million Indian consuming class. Be it fashion, food or home category, Madan’s experience of working closely with the man, who founded the Future Group and laid the foundation for Indian modern retail, has been rich to say the least. A recent move, which in many ways will mark his return to P&L responsibility with media at its core, calls for working with the largest Indian/MNC brands and develop more innovative ways at the last mile to build positive disposition in the fragmented media market with lesser consumer attention span. This is a business about which not very much is known to the world at large. It gives him the chance to draw out a consumer strategy for modern retail and ensure it makes business sense for the brands using the captive audience in the retail environment.

    A firm believer that India is all where the most exciting things are taking place, Madan represents a generation that had a little baggage from a closed economy and used that smartly to get the best out of a new age economy. Luckily, that period of transformation is still underway

    Jason Mojica has been contributing to Vice since 2007. Since joining Vice he has produced documentaries for the web and for the company's Emmy-nominated HBO series in more than 30 countries including Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, Libya, El Salvador, the Philippines, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Jason was recently named Editor-in-Chief of Vice News. Jason holds a B.A. in Political Communication from George Washington University.

    Matt Monahan leads the product, sales and implementation teams for Arc Publishing, The Washington Post's burgeoning software-as-a-service CMS business. Over the past two years, Monahan has overseen the growth of Arc from a small experiment with university newspapers to an enterprise-scale SaaS business with some of the world's largest publishers as its clients. He has lead the implementation of Arc for major clients such as tronc, publisher of legacy brands like the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune, Canada’s Globe and Mail, and South America’s digital powerhouse Infobae. Monahan also oversees strategy and development for the more than 15 newsroom products that comprise Arc.

    Prior to his work with Arc Publishing, Monahan held a variety of product positions at The Post, including managing The Post's publishing systems internally, and serving as the product manager for video at The Post and The Post's various commercial products. Monahan began his career at Boston Scientific.

Pedro is also involved on the launching of new digital projects on Expresso. Alongside his work on Impresa, Pedro is also a consultant for Innovation Media Consuting for digital journalism. Pedro is on the finnishing stage of his masters degree about digital storytelling on the Lisbon University.

    Robb Montgomery is a journalism professor, consultant and serial entrepreneur based in Berlin, Germany. He is the author of two books on visual storytelling and the founder of several businesses including Visual Editors, Montgomery Multimedia and the Smart Film School.

    Montgomery is a former visual editor for the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times. He redesigned the San Francisco Examiner in 2005 and has led innovation projects throughout his career.

    Montgomery teaches Mobile Journalism and Design Thinking at several European universities and is the author of “A Field Guide for Mobile Journalism” (iTunes) and “Smartphone Filmmaking” (Taylor & Francis).

    He has two best-seller courses on Udemy (Smartphone Filmmaking and Mobile Journalism) and founded the Smart Film School in 2015 to provide certificate training resources for schools and organizations.
