  • Futurist / Science Fiction Author

    Karl Schroeder is a professional futurist as well as one of Canada's most popular science fiction and fantasy authors. He pioneered a new mode of writing that blends fiction and rigorous futures research - most recently authoring a meditation on the dangers of pervasive deep fake news for the MIT Technology Review - ‘Noon in the antilibrary’.  He divides his time between writing fiction and speaking on the potential impacts of science and technology on society.  Living in Toronto, his ten novels have been translated into about a dozen languages. His books include Sun of Suns, Lockstep; his next novel, Stealing Worlds, will be published by Tor Books on June 18, 2019.

    Elina Schüller works as a Director of Media Business in Aller Media Finland. The company is a modern media-, marketing- and data company which publishes Finland´s biggest magazine Seiska, runs country´s biggest discussion forum Suomi24 and has been a pioneer in building and commercializing it´s data capability. Elina is focused on developing media products and modernizing ways of work in newsrooms.

    Elina has 20 years´ experience in news and magazine media. Prior to Aller Media she worked as a Managing Editor in Ilta-Sanomat, the biggest media in Finland. She has also worked for Iltalehti.

  • Chief Digital Officer, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Germany

    Before joining FAZ as their Head of Electronic Media, Thomas headed up the Online Business department at DD+V Media Group in Dresden - a group that includes the Sächsische Zeitung in Dresden, pioneers in introducing paid content to Germany.

    Educated at the Axel Springer School Of Journalism, Hamburg, previous roles include Editor, Sächsiche Zeitung am Sonntag and Managing Director, Dresdner Magazin Verlag.

    Schwarz is the editor in chief of 4c, a trade magazine for print, design & digital media. 4c is being published in an edition for Austria and since 2013 also in an edition for Germany. The circulation for both editions: 11.000 copies. 4c is very much interested in involving its readers not only through surveys, but also with regular discussions with its readers on Twitter (called: #4ctalk), mainly on business topics, or workshops and conferences. Some of the exclusive stories 4c has published about the print media business were quoted in newspapers and magazines in the German speaking region.
    Martin Schwarz was awarded „Specialized Journalist of the Year 2016“ by the „German Association of Trade Press“ (Verband der Deutschen Fachpresse) for outstanding journalistic achievements.

    Moritz holds a Diploma degree in Print Plant Management from Munich University of applied sciences and a Master of Science degree in Graphic Arts Systems from Rochester Institute of Technology (NY, USA). He started his career at Fraunhofer IGD working on projects for Heidelberger Druckmaschinen and was involved specifying the CIP4 JDF format. As Chief Operating Officer he worked for the Bauer media group subsidiary in Magdeburg being responsible for the daily production of the large regional newspaper in a highly automated print plant. Since 2004, Moritz Schwarz has executed more than 200 production related consulting projects globally for WAN-IFRA.

  • Founder, Hoaxmap.org and fact-checker at Correctiv

    Karolin Schwarz is a fact-checker at correctiv.org, an investigative nonprofit medium. CORRECT!V's team of four aims to debunk rumours circulating on Facebook as well as false claims in general. In 2016, she founded Hoaxmap.org, a platform dedicated to refutiating false news about refugees and migrants in German speaking countries.

    Born in Graz in 1966 he studied Jurisprudence (his dissertation was on the subject of ‘Media Law') at the Karl-Franzens University Graz. During his time studying he was able to gather experiences as a journalist at various daily and weekly newspapers from 1986 onwards and was appointed to Chief Editor in 1991 at the weekly newspaper "der neue Grazer/der neue Steirer". Simultaneously he was substantially involved in the establishment of the first Grazer Stadtradios (town radio) 107, 5 (1997/98). In 2002 Klaus Schweighofer moved to Equity and Finance Management at "Styria Medien AG" and since then has been responsible, besides radio and television participation at home, above all, for the expansion of "Styria" in Slovenia and Croatia. Amongst other things, the newly founded daily newspapers "24sata" (Croatia) and "zurnal24" (Slovenia) came under his area of responsibility. With the foundation of "Styria Media International AG" 2005 he was appointed to the Board and additionally held a series of Executive and Board of Directors´ seats. On 3rd March 2008 Klaus Schweighofer was appointed to the Board at "Styria Media Group AG". He continues to belong on the Board of "Styria Media International AG". Klaus Schweighofer is married and father of two children.

    Saurav Sen is a senior journalist-turned digital media consultant based in New Delhi. He has worked for major media brands like The Times of India, India Today, The Telegraph, The Asian Age etc, apart from Khaleej times, Dubai and The Guardian, London in more than 23 years of journalistic and stellar media management experience. He has been at the forefront of India’s digital media evolution ever since the internet came to India in 1995.

    He became a full-time digital media consultant since 2007, running his boutique consultancy firm, Sidnet Digitalia, and advising clients both in India and abroad. Saurav is a noted public speaker, a sworn internet evangelist and an empanelled digital media expert trainer for WAN-IFRA.

    Rajiv Sen

    Rajiv Sen has more than 19 years of experience in the Printing Industry with extensive exposure to latest maintenance practices, preventive & predictive maintenance approach & “Hands-On” maintenance methods for effective trouble shooting of plant assets.He started his career with BCCL as a trainee engineer in Kolkata branch & is currently heading the asset management function under Mechanical Engineering Department at Kolkata. 

    He is Mechanical Engineering Graduate from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar.

His work has been nominated for an EMMY and his television programme, Media Report, was voted by viewers as Europe’s Best Business Programme. He continues to work as a live events and television host and presenter globally.

    Nicholas is responsible for Perfil’s digital platforms in Argentina and Brazil, which count with approximately 30 million unique visitors spread across 34 different properties. From Sao Paulo, Nicholas leads a highly creative team which is in charge of the digital evolution of the 18 sites that, along with the renown title CARAS, form part of Perfil Brasil’s ecosystem. He also coordinates tech development, content management, and Perfil’s proprietary publishing technology in both countries.

    Before joining CARAS Nicholas served as the Digital Strategy Director and Digital Platforms Director at Grupo Estado (Brazil) during 8 years, leading technical and product teams and coordinating digitalization projects for Estadão newspaper, Jornal da Tarde newspaper, Eldorado radio and other Estadão's brands.

    He has been designing and building internet and mobile applications for digital publishing for over 20 years. As a software engineer of the highly regarded Brazilian portal (UOL), Nicholas designed and developed the first brazilian e-commerce website (Pão de Açúcar Delivery) and the Content Management Systems and Subscription Systems used in beginning of UOL and after years.

    Nicholas founded E-systems Solutions, a Brazilian pioneer company in e-commerce and internet applications, acquired by LuminaAmericas Inc, and helped north-american companies like Nike, Carrier, MSN, to launch websites in Brazil with huge impact and success. At LuminaAmericas he helped also important Brazilian companies as AES, Eletropaulo, Unibanco, Somlivre/Globo, Americanas.com and Telefónica.

    Zach Seward

    Zach is the vice president of product and executive editor of Quartz. He leads the teams responsible for product development, audience growth, and data visualization, and also writes about the future of TV and other topics. He previously worked at The Wall Street Journal, first as a reporter covering education and health, then as the newspaper's first social media editor. Before that, he helped launch the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard, covering the media industry.

    Matthew Shadbolt

    Matthew Shadbolt is currently the Director of Real Estate Products at The New York Times, where he is focused on the strategic and tactical value of the real estate vertical. Prior to his current role, Matthew was the Director of Interactive Product and Marketing for The Corcoran Group, Manhattan’s largest residential real estate brokerage, where he was responsible for all of Corcoran’s interactive output, product development, social growth and advertising.

    Sitaraman Shankar is Managing Editor – Special Projects at Network 18. He has 23 years of experience as a journalist, including 12 years with Reuters, most of it in Germany and the UK, and a decade in senior roles in Indian newspapers. He has a passion for training people how to write: He has run more than 120 journalists through his Newswriting With Impact programme.

    K. Shanmugam, is a Singaporean politician and lawyer. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he has been the Minister for Law since May 2008 and the Minister for Home Affairs since October 2015. He previously served as the Minister for Foreign Affairs from May 2011 to September 2015. He has been a Member of Parliament (MP) since 1988. Shanmugam was educated in Raffles Institution from 1972 to 1977, before going on to study law at the National University of Singapore where he graduated at the top of his class with a First Class Honours degree in 1984.

    Ben is a leading expert on digital media, and at WAN-IFRA he has the task of providing independent advice on digital strategy and organisational change. He will also lead the various WAN-IFRA initiatives to support the media industry in its transformation.

    Previously, he was Shaw Media's Chief Digital Officer, and focused in driving digital revenue and audience for their digital products in the United States. Shaw was also the company’s CTO and previously IT Director. He oversaw the alignment of all technologies to Shaw’s audience and revenue growth strategies. He was also actively involved in optimizing Shaw Media's over 100 print and digital publication products and workflows. He is a licensed Apple iOS Developer and an Apple Certified Help Desk Specialist.

He has extensive experience in building large-scale cloud-hosted solutions with a keen eye for product design and analytics. Some of the leading digital publishers such as TheQuint, BloombergQuint, Swarajya and FortuneIndia use Quintype to publish their content online.

    Hyo-Seop Shin is the newsroom editor for the digital news division at Chosun Ilbo, where he has worked since 2004. In October 2015, he became the head of digital news division, which is in charge of the publisher’s VR project, which started in February 2016. VR Chosun App, which his team developed, won "Most Innovative" at 2016 Google Play Awards in Korea. His previous positions at Chosun Ilbo include being an editorial writer and an article editor of culture, entertainment, and sports. Before joining Chosun Ilbo, he worked for the political department of Hankook Ilbo from 1988 to 2004.

    In January 2019 Dmitry joined Culture Trip, a startup operating at the intersection of media and travel, after a career of 21 years at the BBC.

    There he was responsible for developing and implementing the BBC’s digital editorial offer for 40 non-English foreign language new services. Originally from Moscow, Russia, Dmitry worked in various editorial-development roles for the digital section of BBC News. These roles required liaison between editorial, product and strategy teams in order to drive innovation and develop new ways of reaching audiences, increasing engagement across the world and, crucially, driving culture change is newsrooms. He is an experienced digital leader in content creation, specialising in growing audiences across the world, driving editorial changes in newsrooms and adapting the way organisations work in digital space, especially around content innovation and audience engagement. 

    His main area of expertise is on the intersection between Editorial, Organisational, Strategy and Product sectors.

    Isaac Showman leads Reuters consumer business, which includes Reuters TV, Reuters.com and Reuters mobile apps.
