Research Associate, Harvard Business School and Oxford University, United Kingdom

As a researcher at University of Oxford (UK) and Harvard Business School (USA), Grzegorz Piechota studies technology-enabled disruption patterns across industries, including news media. His research work at the HBS focuses on digital business model innovations. His project at Oxford's Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism examines the impact of digital platforms on paid content models of news organisations. In addition, Piechota serves as a digital strategy adviser for Poland’s Gazeta Wyborcza (Agora) and consults with media companies worldwide. He is a member of the INMA Board of Directors and is a past president of INMA’s Europe Division. He is an active member of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, the Online News Association, the Global Editors Network.

Piechota is an experienced editor and news media executive. He began his career at Gazeta Wyborcza in 1996 as a reporter in one of the smallest local offices rising to a news editor and a vice-president of Agora Foundation. A 2016 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, Piechota explored the transformation of the media business and the future of work in creative industries. His recently published research reports include "Evaluating Distributed Content in the News Media Ecosystem” (INMA, April 2016), "The Facebook-Media Relationship Status: It's Complicated" (INMA, October 2016), and “Reality check: making money with Facebook. The digital business strategy of news publishers” (WAN-IFRA, September 2017). Piechota graduated in law. He lives in Oxford in the United Kingdom with his wife and two children. He speaks fluent English, Russian, and Polish.

WAN-IFRA, Deputy CEO

Manfred Werfel is WAN-IFRA Deputy CEO, based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He is responsible for the Expo business of the association. He takes also care of the World Printers Forum, the print community within WAN-IFRA.

Since 1996 Werfel is part of WAN-IFRA’s management team. Over time he was responsible for Research, WAN-IFRA Reports, Expert Committees, Consulting, Training, Print Quality Projects, Events, Innovation Projects, World Press Trends, Congress, World Printers Forum and Expo. In 2012 he acted as Interim CEO.

Managing Director, Australian Metro Publishing, Fairfax Media

Chris is Managing Director of Australian Metro Publishing at Fairfax Media. Prior to this appointment he was Director of Publishing Innovation. In his current role, Chris oversees The Australian Financial Review, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Brisbane Times, WAtoday and Fairfax's Life Media brands (Traveller, Good Food, Essential Baby, Essential Kids).

Chris was previously the founding CEO of HuffPost Australia, a joint venture between The Huffington Post and Fairfax Media, and has more than 20 years' experience building market-leading digital media businesses. He was also the founding CEO of Allure Media, one of Australia's largest independent digital publishers, and responsible for launching Business Insider, Gizmodo, Kotaku, Lifehacker, POPSUGAR and ShopStyle in Australia.

Chris' previous experience includes senior editorial roles at News Corp and production company Endemol Southern Star.

Investigative Reporter and Video Journalist, ICIJ

Scilla Alecci is an investigative reporter and video journalist for International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). Scilla heads ICIJ's Asia Desk, coordinating the investigative work of ICIJ's partners and members in Asia. A native of Italy, before coming to the U.S., Scilla was based in Tokyo where she worked for Bloomberg News and other news organizations. In 2016 she was a member of the Japanese reporting team that took part in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Panama Papers investigation. Her work has also been published by the New York Times, the Huffington Post, the Japanese magazine Shukan Asahi and others. Scilla holds master's degrees in East Asian studies and journalism. She recently published a book in Japanese about the Panama Papers and the new frontiers of investigative journalism. In addition to being a reporter with ICIJ, Scilla was invited to become an ICIJ member in 2017.

Technical and Production Director, The Times of India

Sanat Hazra studied at the Rochester Institute of Technology, earning BS in Photographic Science & Engineering, MS in Printing Technology and attended Tuck College at Dartmouth University studying Corporate Leadership Program. Before joining the Time of India as Technical and Production Director in 2008, Sanat worked at the New York Daily News as VP of Production. Sanat dedicated 14 years with the New York Times prior to joining the New York Daily News. As Executive Director of Production at the New York Times, Sanat was responsible for transforming company’s two printing plants into state of the art operation, optimising the entire supply chain of the newspaper, implementing Statistical Process Control and Six Sigma process and winning many International Newspaper Color Quality Club awards.

Prior to the NYT; he worked for the Crosfield Electronics as Senior Material Science Engineer. At Crosfield Electronics, he developed direct imaging thermal plate for CTP application.

COO, Dainik Jagran-INEXT

Alok Sanwal is the COO of Dainik Jagran INEXT is a media professional with experience in the fields of sales, services, brand management, media services and running a print media set up. He is a Communication Post-graduate from MICA & an Engineering Graduate from BITS, Pilani. He started his career in 1993. He was previously COO & Editor of I-Next, mananging content and business of publication, the bilingual compact size daily from Jagran Prakashan Ltd. Prior to that, he was Vice President of Jagran Prakashan Ltd.

Managing Director, Jang Media Group

Sarmad Ali is Managing Director at the Jang Media Group, Pakistan’s largest media conglomerate having presence in Print, Broadcast and the Digital space.  He is responsible for the group’s revenue function.

Sarmad  has over thirty years of experience in marketing, advertising and media management.  He has been associated with the Jang Group since 1994 when he joined the group as Executive Director of the English daily “The News”.  Under his stewardship, The News became one of Pakistan’s two premier English dailies.  In 1997 he took over as the Group’s Executive Director, Marketing & Sales and in 2006 was promoted as Managing Director. 

Prior to joining the Jang Group, Sarmad has been associated with some of the country’s leading advertising agencies including IAL/Saatchi, where he worked as Director Client Service from 1987 to 1993.

He is presently President of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) and has previously served as its Secretary General and Joint Secretary.  He is also President of the International Advertising Association’s Pakistan Chapter and serves on IAA’s Global Board of Directors.  Sarmad also serves on the council of the World Branding Forum.  He is Board member and Hony Secretary of the Management Association of Pakistan. He is also the Chairman of the Ad-Asia 2019 organizing committee.

Described as of one of Pakistan’s marketing thought leaders, Sarmad has been thrice the President of the Marketing Association of Pakistan.  In 1999, he was awarded the coveted Marketing Excellence Award for his contribution in the field of marketing,  Ranked amongst Pakistan’s top 100 Business Leaders, Sarmad received the Asian Brand Leadership Award from the Asian Brand Congress in 2007 and the 50 Most Talented CMOs Award at the World Marketing Summit in 2013.

In 2013, the President of Pakistan conferred upon Sarmad the Sitara-I-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s third highest Civil Award.

He serves on the Governing Board of the Intellectual Property Organization, Cabinet Division, Government of Pakistan and on the Board of Directors of the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP). He has served in the past, as member of the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Privatisation and Investment in 2003 and as member of the Sindh I. T. Board from 2000–2003.

Sarmad has also been on the Jury of the Global AME Awards (Advertising & Marketing Effectiveness) as well as the M&M Global Media Marketing & Advertising Awards and INMA (International News Media Association) awards.

Sarmad is also on the Board of Directors of the Pakistan Parkinson’s Society and Board of Governors of the Friends of the Burns Centre.

He holds a Master degree from Villanova University, Pa, USA.

Chief Operating Officer, WAN-IFRA, Germany

Thomas Jacob was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer of WAN-IFRA in 2012. In this role, he has responsibilities for developing and implementing the organizations strategy to be the platform for exchange of ideas, information and experiences among the global news publishing industry. Prior to that he was the Deputy CEO, taking care of the regional operations.

Before WAN-IFRA, he worked for DMG Media, publisher of Daily Mail and Metro in UK. As the International Development Director, he identified and evaluated digital media companies in Asia for potential acquisition. He also conceptualized and launched a compact midmarket newspaper, Mail Today for the Indian market as a JV with the India Today Group.

Thomas Jacob is an MBA with high honors from the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business. As a summa cum laude, he is also a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, an honor society for management in the United States. 

He is a trained engineer in electronics and telecommunications, having graduated with distinction from the National Institute of Technology, Suratkal, in India. He also underwent advanced studies in computer networking at ICIS, Singapore.

Independent Media and Communications Consultant

Khun Pichai is currently an independent media and communications consultant. He is currently working on a media project with the German development agency GIZ and ASEAN.

He has conducted various editorial workshops and journalism training programmes for ASEAN journalists and editors as well as communications and media workshops for government officials from Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Timor Leste, Brunei, Malaysia and Thailand.

As of August-September 2016, after over three decades 34 years in journalism and 22 years as an editor, Pichai Chuensuksawadi stood down as Editor-in-Chief of Post Publishing and Editor of the Bangkok Post, Thailand’s leading English-language daily and oldest Thai newspaper, which celebrates its 70th anniversary on 1 August 2016.

Khun Pichai has worked as a journalist for 34 years, starting off as a proofreader in 1980 with the Bangkok Post, working his way up the ranks as a copy and layout editor of the Bangkok World (afternoon tabloid) before moving to the Bangkok Post assuming various positions such as feature writer, foreign affairs reporter, Op-ed pages sub-editor, Editor of Perspectives before finally becoming News Editor in 1992.

During his career Khun Pichai represented the Bangkok Post and Thailand as an Executive Committee and Board Member of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA). He was also Chairman of WAN-IFRA’s Asia Pacific Committee for over a decade before stepping down in 2017.

Head of Marketing, The Daily Star

Winner of South Asia Digital Media Awards 2017 by Google and WAN-IFRA, "South Asian Business Excellence award by HRD Congress and The Most Influential global marketers by World Marketing Congress, Tajdin is a bold but a thoughtful leader who has brought a vision of change, far broader than " a tweak here and a tweak there". Currently working as "Head of Marketing" in The Daily Star, the leading English daily of the country. He is a passionate, creative and result driven leader with strong understanding of Business strategy and transformation. He has revamped the business model of The Daily Star and created alternative channels to ensure business growth. He has recently launched Messenger BoT, kind of first for a media house in South Asia and this achievement has been highlighted in INMA, the International News Media Association and GXpress, an Australia based technology newspaper. He has also been invited to Chennai, India as a speaker to present case study on Artificial Intelligence based digital product along with BBC UK and other renowned
brands.

He possesses extensive knowledge in marketing, strategic planning, project management and business development experience across media, telecoms, Oil & gas, courier & logistics and fast moving consumer goods industries. He has also worked for flagship brands like BAT, Chevron, Robi Axiata ltd and DHL Express ltd.

He represented The Daily Star in World News Congress in Washington DC and Digital Media Congress
in Hong Kong. Apart from that he attended number of training programs and workshops in Germany,
Switzerland, Singapore, Bangkok and Srilanka. Tajdin is also a successful Google Squared (The digital
marketing leadership course developed with Google) online graduate. He is also passionate about writing articles on his blog (www.tajdinhassan.com) and sharing those on various social networking sites. He has done his executive MBA from IBA and currently he is also the President of Alumni Association of Brac University.

Media Consultant, UK

Subhajit Banerjee is a London-based journalist with over 15 years of experience as editor, reporter, producer and product manager in companies including the Guardian, the Daily Telegraph and Conde Nast International. He is an expert in mobile and digital journalism and was the Guardian's first Mobile Editor. He is deeply interested in the impact of technology on journalism and the way it shapes new behaviours and products. Banerjee started his career in India with the Business Today magazine and also worked in newspapers such as the Calcutta Telegraph.

Investigative Reporter and Editor, Tempo Media Group

Wahyu Dhyatmika, Indonesia, is an investigative reporter and an editor for Tempo Media Group, an independent news organization based in Jakarta.

In 2010, Wahyu and his colleagues investigated suspicious bank accounts that belonged to prominent police generals in Indonesia. After publishing their findings, unidentified men threw a molotov cocktail bomb into Tempo's office. His investigation into fraud and corruption within the government-backed insurance scheme for Indonesian migrant workers in 2012 won an award from The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Jakarta.

With his team, he also won the prestigious Mochtar Lubis Award for best investigative reporting in 2011, for a story about match-fixing in the Indonesian soccer league. Wahyu initiated a collaborative reporting project between Tempo, The Reporter (Taiwan) and MalaysiaKini (Malaysia) to investigate human trafficking in the region in 2016. 

Wahyu was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 2015. He is also a board member for The Alliance of Independent Journalist (AJI) Indonesia.

GM Marketing, Group of Digital, PT Kompas Cyber Media

Gemi is an all-round marketing professional with more than 13 years experience in advertising/marketing area. He have worked at MEC Indonesia as Director of Strategy & Innovations then moved to brand side at FWD Indonesia where he led its Digital Marketing unit and E-Commerce. Expanding his experience, he then moved to publishing business by joining Kompas Cyber Media (Digital Group of Kompas Gramedia) as GM Marketing. 

Recently, Gemi was appointed as Head of Marketing & Product for KG Media where he’s overseeing all media platforms (Broadcast, Print & Digital) in Kompas Gramedia Group which give him better understanding of the industry's ecosystem. 

Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Press Holdings Ltd.

Anthony joined SPH as Executive Vice-President, Chinese Media Group in February 2015. Anthony was appointed Deputy Chief Executive Officer on 1 July 2016. He oversees the media businesses of SPH, which includes titles such as Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao, Berita Harian, Tamil Murasu, as well as radio stations under SPH Radio.

Anthony also manages the Group’s Healthcare business.

Prior to joining SPH, Anthony was Deputy Secretary (Policy), Ministry of Health and concurrently Special Assistant to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew (2011-2014). During his career with the Singapore Public Service spanning more than 15 years, he served in various organisations including the Ministry of Finance, Home Affairs, Manpower as well as the People’s Association.

Anthony currently serves on the boards of Singapore Power Limited and several SPH subsidiaries. He also serves on private/non-profit organisations.

Anthony graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1997 with a Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) in Political Science. He also has a Master of Science (Management) degree from the Stanford Business School.

Nasr ul Hadi leads the Int'l Center for Journalists' (ICFJ) Knight Fellows in India.  This team — editorial, multimedia, product, technology and strategy consultants with diverse experience across print, broadcast and digital news media​ ​— drives innovation experiments​ in newsrooms' story, product, workflow and/or business models, by developing and expanding the use of new technologies and digital-led best practices that improve access to quality information and journalism.

ICFJ Knight's hosts/partners in India have included established legacy brands and journalism startups, publishers in both English and local languages, mostly in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, but also in smaller cities deeper in the subcontinent — Hindustan Times, Indian Express, Dainik Jagran, Deccan Herald, IndiaSpend, among others.

Hadi's own focus is “culture hacking” in editorial teams to encourage sustainability, scalability and replicability of data-led news workflows. He has been a regular speaker and trainer on digital-led newsroom innovation at leading industry conferences, bootcamps and leadership roundtables worldwide, including those organised by the Online News Association (ONA), World Association of Newspapers (WAN-IFRA), Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ), and Int'l Journalists Network (IJNet).

Beyond work, he co-manages local chapters of the global Hacks/Hackers community, and has occasionally taught digital storytelling in postgraduate and mid-career classrooms. Hadi studied engineering and digital media at the Aligarh and Columbia universities, respectively. 

CEO, The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Bhd

Datuk Abdul Jalil Abdul Hamid was appointed as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad effective March 2017.

Jalil was the Group Managing Editor of NSTP since October 2011. At the NSTP, he is in charge of the overall content policy and management of the print division of the Media Prima group. He runs the editorial department of the NSTP group and oversees the print and digital content of the three newspapers of the group.  

Prior to this, he set up and headed the National Communications Team, a special unit under the Prime Minister’s Office. The Unit was set up to help spearhead strategic communications advice and planning for the government.

Anu Ahola is currently Senior Vice President responsible for Strategy & Energy within UPM Paper ENA. She has been in her current role since 2013. Ahola joined UPM in 2007 being responsible for strategy creation and implementation processes and Paper Business Group's strategy development. Prior to joining UPM she worked for Nokia and Pöyry.
