Jineth Bedoya Lima, a Colombian journalist, was awarded WAN-IFRA’s Golden Pen of Freedom in 2021 for her dedication to the profession of journalism. She was recognised for her courage and tireless work in fighting impunity and promoting and protecting women’s rights.

Known for her reporting on paramilitary groups’ abductions – Jineth was herself abducted in May 2000 and August 2003.

Today she leads the No Es Hora de Callar (It is not time to be silent) campaign against violence against women, and for this work was appointed in 2022 as a UN global ambassador in the fight against sexual violence in the context of the armed conflict.

She has received a host of global awards. She is the 2020 recipient of the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize and, in August 2019, won the Press Freedom Grand Prix from the Inter-American Press Association (SIP). In 2016, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in the defence of women’s rights as a result of her campaign against gender violence and impunity in Colombia. Jineth also received the CJFE International Press Freedom Award, sponsored by Canadian Journalists for Free Expression, and the Courage in Journalism Award by the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), both in 2001.
